The Barnsley War Memorials Project and Heritage Silkstone have been working together to commemorate the men whose names appear on the War Memorials of Silkstone.


Barnsley War Memorials Project

Barnsley, unlike some other towns and cities around the country, has no central Roll of Honour to remember the Fallen of World War One, and so this project was begun to provide a co-ordinating hub for the recording and preservation of the information on all of the War Memorials in the Barnsley area.

It is recognised that many of the memorials in our area have already been recorded and researched by dedicated volunteers.  The Silkstone War Memorial was one of these.  Now the information collected by the volunteers at Silkstone is being made available online for the first time.

The Imperial War Museum's definition of a War Memorial on their War Memorials Archives site:

We consider a war memorial to be any tangible object which has been erected or dedicated to commemorate those killed as a result of war, conflict or peacekeeping; who served in war or conflict; or who died whilst engaged in military service.

You may know of a War Memorial - it could be anything - in a club, place of work, school or even a private home.  Please get in touch with the Barnsley War Memorials Project so that the names of the Fallen can be remembered with their fellows.

In Silkstone Church there are three War Memorials:

Silkstone All Saints WW1 (originally in Stainborough St James)
Silkstone All Saints WW2 (originally in Stainborough St James)
Silkstone All Saints, British Legion Memorial Plaque WW1 & WW2 

In Silkstone Churchyard there are four Commonwealth War Graves Commission burials:

George Padgett,

There are also seven gravestones which remember nine fallen men who are NOT buried there.

The Silkstone War Memorial across the road from the church on Martin's Croft lists 14 WW1 names and 3 WW2 names.
